What do we use during our investigations?
There are several basic instruments that almost every paranormal investigation group use, and the rest may vary from one to the other.
1) EMF Reader (Electromagnetic Field). This device will pick up on energy spikes within the environment upon investigating the rooms/place. However, you must be sure not to confuse the power box within the area to be something paranormal. Some can leak high amounts of energy which can even cause hallucinations, etc.
2) Digital Voice Recorder (Used for EVP's). Digital voice recorders can pick up sounds and frequencies that we may find inaudible to our hearing. Many will filter out the "white noise" to find various EVP's (Electronic Voice Phenomenon) within the recording.
3) Dowsing Rods (Copper or other metal versions). Dowsing rods have been around for hundreds of years. Originally used to find water lines beneath the Earth for well digging, they can also detect and indicate energy fields and lines. Some use them for spirit communication.
4) Infrared Camera ("heat vision"). Our human eyes can't see the light spectrum area that includes infrared. These cameras enable others to see heat signatures that may indicate spirit activity (such as heat on a unoccupied chair).
5) Digital Video Camera. Digital video cameras and picture cameras help document and file photographs or footage of possible paranormal events. They can pick up ORB movements or flight paths, apparitions, voices, etc.
6) Digital Laser Thermometer. Laser thermometers can detect and display "cold spots" where possible paranormal occurences are taking place. Quick and easy!
7) "The Ovilus I". We saw this on Paranormal State and of course for my birthday I had to buy it! Has several modes: 1)Dictionary Mode: Generates words from dictionary based on measurements/readings in the atmosphere 2) Phonetics Mode: Generates sounds like Ch, Ba, Ca, S, etc and if you get actual words that's quite something! 3)Combination Mode: the first two combined. 4)EMF Mode 5)Yes or No Mode 6)Dowsing Mode. A really fun investigative tool!

Whether I am investigating in a group, or going solo, the two primary tools I use are quite simple. I do my best work when recording for EVP, using an old fashioned analog tape recorder. The other tool is a pendulum. I always like to start with a pendulum to ascertain a presence or not. From past practice however, there always is someone present, no matter the location or reported activity. The spirits are all around us, 24/7, just some are more comfortable in interacting with us than others. I gauge the strength of the 'answer' I receive after asking a question, sometimes that pendulum has a mind of it's own!! At the investigation at the Holly Hotel, during a pendulum session, a question was asked if 'they' needed help. "They' answered in such a way (yes!) that the pendulum was swinging with such force, had I let it go, it would have sailed across the room and crashed into a wall! They definitely were trying to tell us that they needed help, badly. it seems in a lot of locations, the spirits divide themselves into small groups, and they find a place within the location to exist. In this case, there was a dark energy that existed in the basement, and the 'upper floor dwellers' were intimidated by the 'basement people'. They are all aware of each other, and chose to avoid each other, for the most part. But when they cross paths, that is when there can be trouble. It is basically the same in the living world, we avoid those bad situations and the people involved, and sometimes crossing paths cannot be avoided. The dark energies like to act for the most part like bullies, they pick out the weakest or the most meek of them, to bother. Although they cannot phsically harm them, the memory of what a physical alteracation is is all too real. I have heard some spirits lament, "he tried to choke me, also heard was, "he said he was going to burn me", things like that. So their fear is all too real and danger is evident in their minds. We have no real way of knowing what truly goes on during one of these 'attacks', all we know is that they report that they are frightened and intimidated by these dark energies, and they want help with dealing with them.
We are in a position to try and help everyone to get along. Sometimes just by acknowledging that these things are going on, and we are aware of what they are doing, some will pull back and stop bothering the more placid spirits. For the most part, when you think about it, they had been allowed free reign to do what they wanted with out consequence. Now that we can show them that we are aware of them and what is going on, it is a step in the right direction in trying to promote harmony amongst them all. The use of higher tech devices all have a place in the investigative procedure. Each one of us that uses a particular device, should try to become the very best at using it. We should always do things to the best of our abilities, using our combined knowledge will help us strive to do our very best for those who need help, whether in the living world, or in the spirit realm.

I would say the most "essential" equiptment would be an EMF reader, an infrared laser thermometer (eBay or hardware store), and a basic digital camera although weird pictures do come up on point-n-shoot disposables on ocassion. The first two shouldn't be expensive at all and as for the camera, their prices have come down alot since they've been out on the market for years now. The rest are items you kind of collect over time!

you know i use for dowsing is pendulums they can be used to get answers to find specific spots you maybe looking for , such as hot spots ect. I have a few of them but have a favorite amethyst. I thought about them copper rods when casting a circle however they look a bit bulkley to me.. bb phoenix take care.
To be honest i am not excited about orbs really there are just to many explanations for them. dust, pollen, wind flare up with sand all these outside entities'. and old homes have tones of dust if you want proof stop over lol. but I know the reverse thick storms of sediments is a sign. but it just don't get my blood moving really , I mean i seen it on the tv in London and oopie not a sympathetic stimuli grabber is it?
You know what I would like to see is a full body appreciation. stuff like that. I mean the real stuff. You know when i see it on TV i am not impressed, you know why, Its like they put a huge flash bang bang then commercial, again that's just to get your blood boiling. lets keep it quiet, and really give them what they want. that's a real deal. so many people seen round objects its really not the big deal. I think that one pic you all have is cool the white appreciations you can not doubt that. Now, a Chinese kid and that other boy in college is making them walk across a walk way with a simulator with the computer will now that's going to wreck it for allot of people. People are becomming so good with the computer technologie that how are we going to know the difference??? what's real and what is not? I am kinda glad that atleast back in the day.... 80's they were not there yet but now they are really there. bummer.
I think the less you use the better. The less likely everyone will think its a not real. I mean if you use less machines and more people. tablets, real psychic's the real deal. limit what you take, I think it maybe just a better route, a different take. than everyone else.

Have you ever dealt with spirits before they are the start up kit. believe me, there is no equipment other than the first time be with someone that knows what they are doing, spites can be good and bad. you want to be with someone that can protect you and show you how to protect yourself blessed be. Phoenix. Remember they used to be alive now they are dead, they still got baggage. there usually is a reason why they are here. Sometime because we ask, or they want to protect us , or they are not ready to cross over for a reason. and it is that reason no equipment is safe only if the wise practitioner knows how to use it and done it a million times because when you see something you never have in your live your body will freak. generally not unless you took a downer. i am serious. this is a serious real important and respectable thing people do for a reason i hope not for fun. please be careful and be with someone, I am sure people could get hurt. thanks Also thank of it like this , how would you feel if someone came to your house you didnt know, with a bunch of equipment and stated them and there mates were going to crash out and record you all day and we are going to ask you questions all day and you don't know us and you got to do what we say and thats that. HOW are you going to feel or react. I wouldnt want to be that person talking to that spirt. always ask permission. but have a reason. and don't barge in on spirts they have feelings too........... and some youll piss right off and some not best of luck me

Hey Harold! I got the Ovilus from "Digital Dowsing". I got it for around $200 but that was when it first came out; I'm sure its gone down in price by now. There may also be some other companies with similar items but the Ovilus is pretty cool

I truly appreciate all of your responses and help! It was extremely helpful as well as educational! I've been interested in the paranormal since I lost an old fiancé ten years ago. The police called it a suicide within the first 20 minutes of his death when his family, friends etc..believed it to be murder as did I. Then my oldest brother died totally unexpected at 48 and I fought and got custody of his son so I always wonder how my brother feels I'm doing with his son now 8 yrs later and his son is now 21. Lastly, my mother passed 4 yrs ago and I still miss her everday!
I've been watching all the paranormal shows for years! I love Ghost Hunters for their skeptisism and Paranormal State for finding out why the spirits are still here and haven't crossed over! Alot of the other shows I feel are strictly intrusive and strictly for entertainment purposes and that truly upsets me!!! That is why I appreciated Phoenix's advice and insight truly I did!!! I do appreciate the fact that we are entering their place/space. I hate surprise visits most of the time so I would definately be very aware I'm just a visitor in their "world".
With that said, this is why I'm asking for as much advice as possible and very much would love to learn and/or train under someone with a much greater understanding and experience of the paranormal!! I am also very new to Michigan so I truly don't know where to begin/start! Id love to meet others who are interested in the paranormal, willing to teach, mentor etc.... I had a few strokes while pregnant with my now 15 yr old daughter so I'm considered to be legally blind hence no drivers licsence but I can see but I'm impaired. My husband is also interested in the field too so he can and would be able to drive me anywhere needed. So if any one would be willing to at least meet with me to educate, advise,mentor or just point me in the right direction Id be forever greatful!!!!
I do want to once again thank the above- mentioned people for all of their knowledge and advice!!! Lastly, Phoenix, your words of wisdom, warnings and appreciation towards the paranormal and/or spirits didn't go unoticed or unappreciated!! I truly understand your respect for the spirits and appreciation that we are going into their homes and that should never be forgotten EVER!!! They were great words of wisdom and advice and I will definately NEVER forget your eloquent words!!

Thank you all for everything, I am getting weak, on and off, I wish you all well and safe, I understand how you must respect there home, my home was haunted and I cleared it myself. It took several attempts there were 4 spirits in my home. Finally they were cleared. It was something , I didn't see the grand finally my son did in the kitchen when all the dishes rattled, and the foot steps marched Thur the hall as the white candle came to its end. I had finally fell asleep. I thought i would of never got them all out, but they finally were gone, However I still periodically cleanse the house for safety sake. Its a long long story. but bright blessings we are cleared and safe. phoenix
